My
Understanding of Assessment as an Elementary Student

Looking back on elementary and high school,
my main memories of assessment surround report cards. I can recall the odd
rubric but it’s hard to imagine I gave them much thought since, different then
university, we would not have known the weight of each assignment or test.
Thus, the majority of my focus when it came to assessment would have been on
our mid year and final report cards. I think as a young student I must have
believed assessment was entirely test and project based. I likely would not
have realized that daily work such as group discussions or full class
reflections would have any weighting on my overall assessment. I also believe
that I thought of assessment only as a final mark rather than a progression of
learning.
My
Understanding of Assessment as a Teacher Candidate
So far, my experience in teacher education
has taught me that assessment is a combination of many items that assist in
keeping track of a students progression and understanding of their learning. I
now recognize that assessment is ongoing, and requires attention to detail,
collection of evidence and the ability to differentiate the progression of one
student from another rather than expecting all students to follow the same
patterns of progression. If I think about assessment in an elementary classroom
today I imagine much of it to be similar to the tasks and daily activities
involved in my elementary classrooms but I also believe a lot of it would now
be related to technology due to its growing prominence in education. However, regardless
of the exact tasks my main understanding of assessment is that it is continuous
and it is specific to the individual.

In our assessment class we unpacked some of
the major aspects of Assessment and the educational document ‘Growing Success’.
It was shocking to see exactly how much goes into assessing individual
students. I look forward to delving into each aspect more thoroughly throughout
our Assessment course to gain a deeper understanding and therefore boost my
confidence before I begin assessing students in my practicum classroom.
